Darren knew about Natalie’s background—her gambling-addicted father, her parasitic family. If she had won that award, her life could have taken a completely different path. She could have changed her entire future.
His mind was suddenly filled with an image of Natalie, heartbroken over losing the championship.
“Darren, you and Natalie are divorced. Why are you still so obsessed with her?” Marie demanded.
Darren seemed not to hear her. “Marie, you shouldn’t have stolen from her.”
“How did I steal from her?” Marie retorted. “She’s the one who stole what was mine! She stole you from my side!”
“Marie, just because I don’t say certain things doesn’t mean I don’t know them. The moment you chose to marry my brother, you became my sister-in-law. How can you still say things like that?”
Marie was speechless, a strong sense of crisis washing over her. Why was Darren treating her this way?
“I was never yours to begin with,” Darren said. “I hope that honor truly belongs to you. But if you did steal what belonged to Natalie, I won’t let this go. At the very least, you must apologize to her publicly.”
“Darren, what are you saying? You want me to apologize to her?”
Marie was hysterical. Hanley ran over. “Daddy, how could you talk to Auntie like that? You used to teach me to respect her. You even told Mommy she had to respect her. Why are you being so mean to her now and telling her to apologize to Mommy?”
