Patrick Mercer strode onto the stage. His sharp, intelligent eyes seemed to see right through people, radiating an intense pressure.
But even so, it didn't diminish his popularity in the slightest.
The crowd was electrified. It was the academic, Mr. Patrick Mercer!
He had really come!
Natalie's eyes widened. She never expected to see him here.
Five years, and they were meeting again.
"Mr. Mercer! Mr. Mercer, over here!"
"Mr. Mercer, I'm a huge fan!"
The children were ecstatic, but Hanley was stunned.
Was there something wrong with his ears? He thought he'd heard Mr. Mercer say he wouldn't accept him as a student.
But Marie had told him that the next part of the program was Mr. Mercer coming out to give him birthday wishes and announce to everyone that he would become his student, making everyone jealous.
But why was Mr. Mercer saying he wouldn't take him? Right now, everyone was too excited about seeing him to process what he'd just said. But once they did, he would become a laughingstock.
Hanley quickly grabbed Marie's hand, his voice tense. "Auntie Marie, did I hear him wrong? Why did Patrick Mercer say he won't take me? Didn't you say I could be his student?"
Marie's face was grim. She had deliberately told Hanley to say that.
She had made the grand claim, assuming that with so many people present, Mr. Mercer wouldn't embarrass them. Later, she could pull some strings and get Hanley into the junior program.
But she hadn't expected Patrick Mercer to be so uncooperative. Was he trying to humiliate them in front of everyone? Did he not want his million-dollar appearance fee?
