They had been husband and wife in two lifetimes, but never managed to become a real couple. Maybe they were meant to meet, just not meant to last. Some people just aren’t meant for forever, no matter how fate throws them together.
“It looks like it’s about to rain. Let’s head inside,” Isabella said.
Harold followed her in.
“Susan, could you bring Harold a glass of warm water and wash some fruit?” Isabella called out as soon as they stepped in.
Susan smiled, greeted Harold, and then went off to get his water. She brought over a plate of fresh fruit a moment later.
“By the way, Susan, Stephanie’s next door. Go see if she needs any help,” Isabella added.
Susan understood what was really going on. Isabella was sending her away. Still, Susan didn’t argue. She just nodded respectfully and left the main house.
With Susan gone, Isabella turned to Harold. “Susan and the others only stayed because Ethan insisted. I pay their salaries now, and the bodyguards are always professional. Susan is polite to me, but her loyalty is to Ethan. She’s known him since he was a child, and he trusts her completely.”
Susan’s husband worked as the butler at the Adams Estate. Their whole family served the Adams family.
“They’ve been with Ethan for years. They know this place inside out and they’re all efficient. It makes sense for them to stay. Susan is the housekeeper Ethan trusts most, so having her here gives him peace of mind.”
Honestly, if Harold were in Ethan’s shoes, he’d do the same. Putting your most reliable people with someone you care about just makes sense.
