If those thugs wanted revenge, they should come after him. Why were they messing with the woman he cared about? Why go after Isabella? Was it because they figured out how much she meant to him? Did they want him to feel what it was like to lose someone he loved?
Harold didn’t bother to hide his annoyance. “The only reason those criminals are after Isabella is because of you. If you really cared, you’d stay away from her. How much more trouble do you want to bring her?”
Ethan shook his head. “It’s too late for that. They’ve already set their sights on her. The only thing I can do now is stay close and protect her. That’s the only way I might make up for what’s happened.”
Harold didn’t know what to say to that. He just sat there, silent. The truth was, now that Isabella was a target, keeping his distance wouldn’t change anything.
Neither of them had guessed that those kidnappers were backed by such a big organization. The police were still investigating, trying to take the whole group down, but the people behind it all were being careful. They kept a low profile, sending out only a few underlings to do the dirty work. Those guys had no family, no ties, nothing to lose, and most of them already had criminal records. Even if the police caught them, they couldn’t get to the real mastermind.
Ethan glanced at Harold’s hands and nodded at the folder he wouldn’t put down. “What’s that?”
Harold looked at the file and said, “I want to work with Isabella’s company. These are the partnership details. I can’t show you.”
Ethan frowned. “Since when does The Carter Group have a reason to work with Isabella’s company? Honestly, your group usually works with The Adams Group.”
Harold shrugged. “If there isn’t a project, I’ll make one up. If I want to work with Isabella, I’ll find a way. She’s working so hard to build her business. I might not be able to help her in other ways, but at least I can give her more business. We both win.”
