Jordan paused for a moment, then said, “That’s Ethan’s money. If he wants to give it to Isabella, what are we supposed to do?”
Of course he was jealous. Back when Isabella lived with them, she was just a pitiful girl barely getting by. Even with her mother Cynthia around, it didn’t make much difference. He used to complain to Cynthia, telling her not to dote on Isabella so much, saying Isabella was trying to steal his mom’s love. Cynthia, desperate to keep both herself and Isabella safe under the Lane family’s roof, didn’t dare to show Isabella too much affection.
After college, Isabella could have started working at the Lane Group. Jordan’s dad had planned to offer her a position, but Jordan refused. So Isabella had no choice but to find a job on her own. She did have some backbone. As soon as she turned eighteen, she moved out of the Lane Estate and rented her own place.
Her mom still lived with the Lane family though, so Isabella had to come back often. That’s how Ethan noticed her, started using her as an excuse to get close to Natalie.
Now, just like that, Isabella had gone from nothing to being worth millions—all because she divorced Ethan. There were business owners who worked for decades and didn’t have that kind of wealth. All Isabella had to do was sign the divorce papers. How could Jordan not be jealous?
Ethan was rich. He and Natalie both knew that. But Ethan wasn’t stupid. When the three of them went on trips, Ethan would pay for everything, but there was no way anyone could get free money from him. And none of them had the guts to ask him outright.
Natalie sighed. “Ethan must be pretty down after the divorce. I haven’t even checked on him. He’s so proud. For him to beg Isabella to come back and for her to still insist on leaving… he must feel terrible.”
“It’s a blow to his pride. He probably feels humiliated. We should spend more time with him when we can. The three of us did grow up together.”
Natalie nodded quietly. She knew exactly what Jordan was really saying. He wanted her to care for Ethan, to keep Ethan hooked on her, so Ethan would keep helping the Lane family.
