She even used to give Isabella luxury skincare, back when Isabella was basically invisible in the Lane family. Cynthia never showed much warmth, always wary of Jordan and Jackson, so Isabella just got the bare minimum.
Life wasn’t easy for her back then. She made a few thousand a month, just enough to scrape by with rent and daily expenses. Saving money was out of the question.
After she turned eighteen, Isabella started renting her own place. She only went back to the Lane family home on holidays for a meal, maybe stayed the night, but never for long. She didn’t want to make things harder for her mom or put up with Jordan’s attitude.
“Skincare products don’t cost that much. From now on, you don’t need to buy any. I’ll handle all your skincare and makeup,” Jesse said, jumping at the chance.
Laura just smiled. “I can take care of myself. I don’t want to depend on anyone.”
She never relied on her parents, so she wasn’t about to start relying on Jesse.
“Jesse, you really are a good guy, I know that. I just need a little more time to figure out how I feel about us.”
“Your mom showed me some pictures. They were of you at home, learning to cook, cleaning up. She said you used to be a neat freak. Is that true?” Laura asked, steering things back on track.
They’d gotten a little sidetracked, and she wanted to bring the conversation back.
Jesse looked surprised. “Pictures?”
“Yeah, pictures. Your mom said she took them secretly, printed them all out, and brought them to show me.”
“She wasn’t trying to brag or anything. She just wanted me to see how sincere you are. She came to show where your family stands, too. She told me she knows exactly what I’m worried about.”
Laura still felt touched when she thought about what Janetta had done for her.
It meant a lot to be valued by the Mason family.
“Honestly, your mom coming to talk to me like that really moved me.”
