Harold finally broke the silence. “Barbara, Isabella’s exhausted today. Let her go home and get some rest. I’m fine, really. It’s just a few bumps and bruises. I’ll be back to normal in a couple days.”
Barbara could see Isabella was worn out, so she just nodded and stood with Harold, watching Isabella drive away.
Once Isabella’s car disappeared down the road, Barbara headed for her own car. She drove into the villa’s driveway and parked neatly. Harold closed the main gate behind them.
Barbara looked over at him. “Seriously, Harold? Isabella actually came over and you didn’t even think to invite her to stay for dinner?”
Harold shrugged, rubbing his sore cheeks. “With my face like this, eating is a challenge. Every little move hurts. If I asked her to stay, she’d just feel guilty and probably lose her appetite. I already asked her to bring me some porridge. Took everything I had just to finish it.”
Barbara’s eyes softened as she looked at the bruises on his face. “What’s wrong with Ethan? He really let you have it. Didn’t you fight back?”
“I did. Ethan’s just as messed up as I am.” Harold grinned, then winced at the pain. “Whatever I’m feeling, he’s feeling too. At least Isabella cared enough to check on me. He doesn’t even get that. That must drive him crazy.”
Barbara laughed. “So you two really brawled over a girl?”
“I guess you could say that. Ethan started it. He hit me, so of course I hit him back. I didn’t do anything wrong.”
They wandered back toward the house together.
As they walked, Harold continued, “Ethan asked if I’d go after Isabella once their divorce went through. I told him the truth, and he just lost it. That’s how we ended up fighting.”
Barbara scoffed. “Is he really having one of those ‘didn’t know what he had until it was gone’ moments?”
Harold shook his head. “I don’t think he’s in love with her. He just feels guilty. Still, they’ve been married for a few months. Seeing each other every day, some feelings are bound to develop.”
