“If we start drinking now, it’s going to mess with our work this afternoon. Aren’t you heading back to the office?” Jesse asked, quickly dishing up some food for his two friends.
Ethan broke eye contact with Harold and picked up his glass again. He took a sip, grabbed a bite to eat, and shrugged. “I’m not going back. Isabella’s shop is slammed right now. I told her I’d stay and help out.”
Jesse nodded. “If you two still have work, let’s skip the drinks today. Next time, when we’re all free, let’s have a real get-together. It’s been ages since you guys invited me out anyway.”
He grinned, but there was a trace of something else in his voice. “You two are getting closer these days. Your companies keep teaming up, and it feels like you’re shutting me out. Are we still friends or what?”
Harold smiled, shaking his head. “Of course we’re still friends. We always have been. You’ve just been really busy lately, and so have we. That’s all. Next time there’s something fun, we’ll make sure you’re there.”
Ethan let out a dramatic sigh. “I was starting to think you two were plotting something behind my back. Alright, just don’t forget me next time.”
He took another drink, then stood up and walked over to Isabella and Laura, raising his glass. “To you both. Wishing the shop nothing but success.”
Isabella rolled her eyes. “Ethan, stop calling me your wife. We’re divorced.”
He grinned, not missing a beat. “The papers aren’t final yet. You’re still my wife, at least for now. Honestly, you’re the only woman I’ll ever call that. I meant what I said. You’re the only one I’ll ever marry.”
