“Natalie, I’ve got to bring Isabella her dinner, so I’m heading out.” Ethan looked away and stepped past her, ready to leave.
“Wait, Ethan. Let me come with you to the hospital. Isabella’s been hurt, and I haven’t visited her yet because of my health.” Natalie turned and reached out, grabbing his arm gently to stop him.
Ethan glanced down at her hand, and Natalie let go, looking a little embarrassed and upset.
“If you come with me, Natalie, Isabella might get the wrong idea. If you really want to see her, just go tomorrow on your own. Don’t come with me. She’ll misunderstand.”
Natalie frowned. “What would she possibly misunderstand? I’ve known you since before she was even born. We grew up together. Who is she to—”
“She’s my wife,” Ethan cut her off. “No woman wants to see someone else hanging around her husband, especially if that someone is his childhood friend.”
Natalie’s face turned bright red. She wasn’t sure if she was more embarrassed or angry. Lately, Ethan’s attitude toward her kept getting colder. All because of Isabella. Did Isabella really have the power to steal Ethan’s heart? Natalie stubbornly told herself that as long as she didn’t give up, Ethan’s heart would stay with her.
“Natalie, we’re not kids anymore. You’re married to Jordan now, and I’m married to Isabella. We each have our own families. We need to keep our distance.”
He left her standing there and walked toward his car.
Natalie didn’t stop him again, but she followed him anyway.
“I came by to make you some soup, Ethan. Did you drink the one I made for you yesterday? You’ve always liked my cooking.”
Ethan set two insulated containers on the passenger seat of his car. He closed the door behind him and turned to face her.
