Isabella felt like a different person.
Maybe it was because she’d finally stepped into Ethan’s room. That night, she had another dream, one that dragged her right back into her past life. In the dream, she was desperate, acting like she’d lost her mind, doing everything she could to win Ethan’s love. She tried to make life hard for Natalie at every turn, but no matter what she did, she was always the one who lost. Even when she died, she still lost to Natalie.
She remembered dying and Ethan being the only one who came to take care of her body. He bought her a plot and made sure she was buried properly. From the moment she was killed until the day she was buried, no one else showed up. Not even her own mother.
That hurt more than she could ever describe. Cynthia, her mother, had given up on her completely, thinking she was too much, too dramatic, just plain crazy. Tears slid down Isabella’s face. In the dream, she was wrecked, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
After a whole night of nightmares, Isabella woke up with puffy, red eyes and a pounding headache. All she wanted was to stay in bed forever, but her stomach refused to let her. She was starving.
With a sigh, Isabella dragged herself up. She washed her face, changed her clothes, and started to feel a little bit more alive. Only then did she open her bedroom door, ready to head out.
But right outside, Ethan was standing by his own door. Susan stood a little ways off, talking to him respectfully.
Isabella froze, then quietly pulled her door almost shut, leaving just a sliver open so she could listen.
“Who brought me home last night?” Ethan’s voice was icy.
“The driver and Isabella,” Susan answered.
Ethan’s eyes went cold, a frown settling on his face. “Who told her to pick me up?”
Was it the driver? If it was, that guy was basically fired. Ethan had no patience for anyone who acted without orders.
Susan explained, “Isabella left in the evening and only came home when she brought you back. The driver said Mr. Mason called her to pick you up.”
