Ethan scowled. “Isabella, are you really saying you don’t want to sleep with me?”
On their wedding night, she had been the one sobbing her heart out after learning the truth. Now, when he finally wanted her, she was the one pulling away.
“That’s right, I don’t,” Isabella said, her voice steady. “Your heart’s not even here with me. I don’t want to be with a man who’s thinking about someone else, especially when we’re supposed to be at our closest.”
She looked him in the eye, calm but distant. “I don’t want to be Natalie’s stand-in when you lose control. Maybe if you actually loved me, it would be different, but I know now that’s never going to happen. I’m not going to kid myself anymore.”
“You made it clear. You’d give me the title, the security, the life of Mrs. Adams, but you’d never give me love.”
She gave a little shrug. “I’ve accepted it. I’ll take the comfortable life. I won’t beg for your love anymore. And without love, I don’t want sex. Honestly, it just makes me feel sick.”
Ethan couldn’t find any words to argue back.
She went on, “I told your mom you couldn’t... perform, mainly because she keeps pestering us about having kids. I had to say something.”
That got a reaction out of him. “Why would you say it was me?”
She rolled her eyes. “Think about it. If I said it was my problem, do you think your mom would leave us alone? She’d push you to divorce me, and I’d be dragged to doctors, taking all kinds of pills. But if it’s you, she’ll back off. She’s a little scared of you. If she thinks you’re the issue, she’ll stop nagging, and we get some peace.”
Ethan was silent for a moment, then changed the subject. “I’ll come pick you up later. Let’s go out for dinner.”
Now, hearing Ethan’s words, Isabella realized that in her last life, the baby must have had problems too. Instead of quietly going to the hospital, Natalie had made her the scapegoat. This time, Isabella hadn’t even gone against her, but Natalie was still trying to set her up.
Thank goodness she refused to go home for those BBQ ribs, or she might have ended up with the same fate all over again.
Ethan’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Isabella, what did you say?”
She snapped out of it and covered quickly. “Nothing. I was just wondering, with both of them being so healthy, how could the baby have problems?”
It was karma, Isabella thought, but she was smart enough to keep that to herself.
