“Mom, Ethan and I aren’t in a rush to have kids,” Isabella said.
Cynthia sighed. “Ethan’s already thirty and you’re twenty-five. If you got pregnant this year, you’d have the baby next year. The timing couldn’t be better.”
“Mom, please don’t stress about it. We’ll have a baby when the time feels right. It’s a matter of fate. Let’s just go with the flow.”
Cynthia thought for a second, remembering how long it took for Natalie to get pregnant after she married into the family. “Alright, alright. It’s your life. You two can decide. I only brought it up because your sister-in-law is expecting.”
“Mom, now that she’s pregnant, you should keep some distance from her,” Isabella said quietly.
Cynthia paused, then patted Isabella’s hand. It was her way of saying she understood.
A few minutes later, Ethan and Isabella sat down at the dining table. Jordan was beaming. He opened a bottle of wine, pouring glasses for his dad and for Ethan.
Natalie leaned over and whispered, “Don’t drink too much.”
“I’m going to be a dad. I’m celebrating. Just one glass, I promise.”
Ethan smiled and clinked his glass against Jordan’s. “Congrats, Jordan.”
“Thanks!” Jordan was genuinely happy. He was finally going to be a dad, and Ethan wasn’t. It felt like he’d won, again.
Ethan finished his wine in one go, and Jordan quickly filled his glass again.
Natalie gave them a gentle look. “Jordan, Ethan, you should eat something. Don’t just drink on an empty stomach, you’ll get drunk.” She turned to Isabella. “Isabella, could you get Ethan a bowl of soup? He should have something in his stomach before drinking more.”
Isabella glanced at Ethan. “Want some soup?”
Jackson chimed in. “Jordan, Ethan’s right. Natalie’s expecting. Pregnant women can get emotional. You need to be there for her more.”
“This family doesn’t need your money that badly. Even if you two had ten kids, we could support them. Your focus should be on Natalie for now. I’m still here to run the company. I’m not too old to handle things yet.”
He figured he could keep going for at least another ten years. Hopefully by then, Keith would be ready. The kid was smart, and with the right guidance, he could be just as good as Jordan, maybe better. Jackson was well aware of Jordan’s strengths and weaknesses. If he had no choice, he’d let Jordan inherit everything, but now, with options, he wanted to think things through.
The Lane Group had been in the family for three generations. His grandfather started it, his father kept it going, and now it was his turn. He wasn’t about to let Jordan mess it all up.
Jordan just grinned. “Alright, I’ll listen to you. No more evening business meetings. I’ll come straight home after work and spend time with Natalie.”
Jackson was glad Jordan dropped the topic of partnering with the Adams Group. That ship had sailed. Ethan and Melissa had already signed the contract, and the two companies were working together on the new project. Jordan let the subject go.
