The conversation between the three men quickly shifted to business, leaving Isabella on the sidelines. She listened for a while, half tuned in, half lost in her own thoughts, wondering what kind of investments she could make to actually start earning her own money. Starting a business these days was a minefield. You had to do your homework, watch the market carefully, and avoid leaping in blindly just to end up losing everything.
In her last life, before she married Ethan, Isabella had worked in a small company, pulling in about five or six thousand a month. Cynthia had wanted her to join The Lane Group. Jackson had agreed, but Jordan had flat out refused. Not wanting to be the reason for another family argument, Isabella had turned down Jackson’s offer. She found a job on her own, and as a total newbie in the working world, she learned the hard way and got knocked around plenty.
After she married Ethan, he’d told her she didn’t need to work anymore. He said it wasn’t right for her to be out in public, that her place was at home, raising a family. He handed her a monthly allowance of three hundred thousand, which was more than enough for anything she wanted. It would have taken her years at her old job to save that much. So she never built a career for herself.
Ethan was a powerhouse in business. Under his leadership, The Adams Group was thriving, bigger than ever. Sometimes she wondered what it would be like to invest alongside him. But she shook off the idea immediately. She knew better. Ethan would never let her be part of his business world. He just wanted her to stand quietly in the background, someone he could point to while he met up with the woman he actually cared about.
“Isabella. Isabella.”
Natalie’s voice cut through her thoughts. Isabella snapped to attention, realizing both Ethan and Jordan were staring at her.
“Have you suddenly gone deaf?” Jordan said, voice sharp. “Natalie called you a few times and you acted like you couldn't hear her. Or do you think that just because you’re Mrs. Adams now, you’re too important to bother with her?”
Isabella rushed to explain. “No, Jordan. I was just caught up listening to you talk about the project. That’s all.”
Jordan let out a sarcastic laugh. “You understood any of that? If you did, pigs could climb trees.”
