Starla's head was spinning, a loud ringing echoing in her ears as Caden kept blabbering.
"You got your revenge. With all that bad blood between you and his family, there's no going back. If you got soft now, you'd be letting your mother down. So yeah, you're free! It's time to celebrate!"
"Shut your mouth!" Starla roared, her patience entirely evaporating.
Caden physically flinched on the other end of the line, nearly dropping his phone.
"Whoa, Starla, what the—"
What was her problem? She'd been practically clawing at the walls trying to get this divorce, and now that she had it, she was furious?
Caden had absolutely no idea what Starla was so mad about. And more importantly, he had no idea that Fairfax hadn't actually signed the papers before going off the grid.
"Where did you take him?" Starla demanded through gritted teeth.
"Hansville City," Caden answered honestly.
"Why the hell did you take him to Hansville? You swore to me you wouldn't get involved!"
"I didn't get involved! I told you I wouldn't interfere while you two were at war. But the war is over, right?"
Since it was over, as Fairfax's best friend, giving him a ride to Hansville City was the least he could do. Caden had felt terribly guilty for abandoning Fairfax during the crossfire. He had promised Fairfax that once the dust settled, he'd be there for him.
So when Fairfax showed up, asking for a simple ride—not a billion-dollar loan, just a ride—Caden couldn't say no.
"It is not over!" Starla screamed.
"Huh?" Caden was completely lost.
