Caden whined to Darian for a good ten minutes, still utterly clueless about how to find Fairfax.
Just before hanging up, Caden suddenly shifted gears. "Look at what happened with Starla. Are you absolutely sure you and Tanya Mercer can survive your family patriarch?"
Whenever the old money families talked about 'passing the torch,' it was always a lie. It was just a temporary test to see if they were ready.
When Caden returned last night, his grandfather had nearly flayed him alive. Did he look like a man with actual power? He was lucky he hadn't been kicked to the curb entirely.
When push came to shove, the old guard still held all the cards. No one could challenge their authority.
On the other end of the line, Darian fell silent.
Hearing his friend sigh, Caden pressed on. "Tanya isn't Starla. If your family decides to make her disappear, you won't be able to protect her."
Starla had Herbert Farley standing behind her. And the Hoggart family...
That was the only reason a titan like the Yelchin Group had crumbled at her feet.
But Tanya had none of that. She had no powerful connections. And Darian didn't possess the ruthless iron grip over his family that Fairfax had over his.
"Worry about your own damn problems," Darian muttered.
"Fine, fine, ignore my free advice."
He hung up.
The moment the call disconnected, a dark shadow lunged in front of his car.
Caden slammed on the brakes in sheer panic. The tires shrieked against the asphalt, burning rubber. Thankfully, the vehicle jerked to a violent halt mere inches away from the figure.
Heart pounding in his chest, Caden stared out the windshield. When he realized who it was, his fear instantly morphed into blinding rage.
