Just as Starla was about to say something else to Herbert, Gabriel arrived. Accompanying him was a beautiful lawyer from Yelchin Group's legal department.
Starla recognized her.
Her name was Yvette Yorke.
Back when Starla first agreed to marry Fairfax, Darleen had ordered Yvette to draft a brutal prenup for Starla to sign. The terms essentially stated that if she divorced Fairfax, she would walk away with absolutely nothing.
Naturally, Starla hadn't signed it.
She immediately told Fairfax, which resulted in a massive blowout fight between him and his mother.
As a result, Starla's relationship with her mother-in-law was completely ruined before the wedding even happened.
But that was just who Starla was! If a relationship was toxic, she simply cut it off. She was never going to sign an agreement that heavily stacked the deck against her.
Seeing the lawyer now, a mocking smirk touched the corner of Starla's lips.
"Ms. Yorke, I recall you leaving Yelchin Group. When did you come back?"
When Starla refused to sign the prenup and married Fairfax anyway, Yvette had abruptly resigned.
It was pretty obvious from that little stunt that her feelings for Fairfax went beyond professional loyalty.
If it had just been a woman's intuition back then...
Now? Her reappearance at this exact, critical moment proved Starla's suspicions right.
Yvette shot Starla a sharp look. "Can we speak privately?"
Her tone was freezing.
It was the exact same icy superiority she had used years ago when she slapped that prenup down and demanded Starla's signature.
But things were different now.
Starla smiled faintly. "In what capacity are you speaking to me?"
Silence.
"Are you here as Yelchin Group's legal counsel, or in some other role?"
The hostility radiating off Yvette was palpable. And for her to display that kind of animosity at a time like this, there could only be one reason: Fairfax.
