A Widow's Poison A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 644

Punish just her?

If only it were that simple.

The motives behind Darleen's actions were deeply entangled with the Yelchin name. Starla had no interest in isolating her vengeance; she wanted to unearth the root of the rot and burn the entire foundation to the ground.

Darleen's breath hitched. "Even if you want to destroy the family, leave Fairfax out of it. He genuinely loved you!"

When it came to her son, maternal instinct overrode everything else. Even if the family empire crumbled, she desperately wanted to protect him.

"He gave you his whole heart! He accepted incredibly unfair terms just to marry you."

"You can do whatever you want to me, to the rest of us, but don't be so cruel to him!"

The irony was bitter. Darleen had once prayed for their separation; now, she was practically begging for Starla to show him a shred of lingering affection.

No matter how much they had looked down on the girl before, they were now painfully aware of her terrifying capabilities.

She had single-handedly brought the Yelchins to their knees. If she decided they wouldn't survive, they wouldn't. Darleen knew she was the villain who caused this, but she wanted Fairfax to make it out unscathed. She had already lost one son; she couldn't bear to watch the other suffer for her sins.

"Cruel?" Starla burst into genuine laughter. "Hearing that word come out of your mouth is the funniest thing I've heard all day."

"You're asking me not to be cruel? Darleen, I don't think you fully grasp what he is to me now. He is the son of the woman who murdered my mother."

The son of her mother's killer.

How could they possibly coexist on the same earth?

The casual, ice-cold delivery of those words made Darleen's heart pound frantically.

"But his feelings for you were real!" she pleaded, her voice barely a suffocated whisper in her own ears.
