Rachel had finally decided to play it cool, opting for a strategic retreat. "Well, Yvan, I guess I'll head back now. Make sure you take it easy at work, okay? You've just got back, and I'd hate to see you overdo it. I'd really worry about you."
No, that wasn't it... There was once someone who waited at home for him, someone who worried about his well-being, who looked after his health.
Who was it? Was it the woman before him now?
Yvan couldn't remember, and the cost of that forgetfulness was agony. Watching Rachel walk away, he clenched his fists and slowly made his way back to the executive office.
Yvan stared at the takeout food for a long while before sitting down in his swivel chair and asking in a low voice, "Did Rachel and I grow up together?"
Carl could only answer, "Yes."
"Then... why did I end up marrying Matilda?"
"Because you had a fling with Ms. Thompson, and under the pressure of both our families and public opinion, you ended up marrying her," Carl laid out the past before Yvan without mincing words. "After that, you still kept in touch with Miss Rachel."
Yvan felt a jolt in his heart. "So, I was cheating on my wife back then?!"
Carl looked up at Yvan with a gaze that screamed, "You're just realizing now that you were a jerk?"
Yvan felt a twinge of discomfort under the judgmental stare of his subordinate, and after clearing his throat, he managed to say, "And then what?"
"Last year, when Ms. Thompson was released, you took away her only son and dragged her into many dangerous situations," Carl's words sliced through Yvan like a slow, torturous blade. "Ms. Thompson was beaten up in prison for you, losing part of her little finger and bearing countless scars on her wrist. Her brother died in a car accident, and she suffered a miscarriage after getting out of jail. Your mistress publicly slandered her with a scandal, and she had to strip in public to prove her innocence. When a criminal attacked in a supermarket, she took all the blows meant for you."
When Carl looked up, his gaze was as sharp as a dagger—
"After discovering the truth, that Ella was behind everything, you tried to make amends, but it was too late. Ms. Thompson wouldn't accept any of your kindness. Half a year ago, you died trying to protect her, and she must have thought she could finally be free."
Carl paused, "But when the Boyd Group was about to fall apart, when everything seemed lost... the one who stepped in to save the day... was still her."
It was still her.
