On the second day, Matilda was up at the crack of dawn to check out. As luck would have it, she bumped into Criss next door just as he was sleepily fumbling with his hair to open his door. The man flashed her a sleepy smile. "Were you the one staying next to me last night?"
"Yeah." Matilda pointed at Criss's face. "You've got something on your face."
"Oh..." Criss yawned and casually wiped his face. "Where? Here?"
Matilda directed, "A bit below your eye, to the right."
Criss kept searching but couldn't find anything. After a while, seeing the mischievous smile playing on Matilda's lips, he finally caught on. "You're pulling my leg!"
"Ha, just checking if you've sobered up from last night." Matilda laughed. "Looks like you weren't as hammered as you thought."
Criss glanced at her. "Was I that bad last night?"
Matilda nodded and then headed towards the elevator. "I'm going to check out. What about you? Coming with me to Whty City?"
"Let's go, together."
Criss also went back into his room to grab his suitcase. "Perfect, I've been missing that little rascal Logan."
"He's been feasting behind our backs with Godfrey."
Matilda chuckled lightly. Just then, the elevator doors opened, and they both stepped in, pressing the button for the ground floor. The elevator began its slow descent.
"Didn't forget anything, did you?"
Just to be safe, Criss reminded Matilda to check. "Better check again."
"I didn't bring much over, just a handbag and my phone."
"Could you have left it at the karaoke bar last night?" Criss began retracing their steps from the night before. "Maybe we were too tipsy to notice, and it got left behind."
"I want to go back and look."
"Wait!" Criss grabbed her. "How much does that keychain cost?"
"About a hundred bucks..." Matilda was getting anxious. "It's not expensive, but it means a lot to me."
"What's so special about it that you're this worried?" Criss tousled her hair. "Think hard. Where else could it be? I'll call the karaoke bar's front desk, see if they've found a keychain. If not, and we go now, it's probably already been swept up by the cleaners early this morning."
Matilda's face fell. Throughout her relatively short life, that keychain had just been quietly lying there, silently witnessing the years go by, accompanying her through thick and thin. It was even with her when she went through her roughest patch... That keychain was the only thing she had on her when she faced her toughest times.
Now that it was gone, it felt like she had lost something crucial. Matilda was anxious. She never actually used it for keys; it was just a trinket. Surely, no one would specifically steal something like that, right?
