A Journey from Bitterness to Truth (Matilda and Yvan) novel Chapter 491

He thought it was time to man up and take on all the responsibilities a man should. He had nothing to offer Matilda as compensation. If she ever got the chance to stab him, and he died, so be it. If he survived, then he'd consider his life barely repaid to Matilda.

Their paths were supposed to diverge from there on.

Yet, here he was, heart still beating, his body reminding him that he was very much alive. He hadn’t given up on Matilda.

He hadn’t even given up hope on making amends.

Yvan glanced at Carl. “Where’s Matilda today?”

“Ms. Thompson went out with her good friend Criss for a drink. They’re hitting the town tonight.”

Drinking?

Yvan wasn’t too thrilled to hear about Matilda and drinking in the same sentence.

After all… too many prying eyes in those places.

“But you don’t have to worry, they’re going with a bunch of friends. Ms. Thompson should be safe,” Carl said softly. “Mr. Boyd, is this how it’s going to be from now on?”

Yvan blinked. “What do you mean?”

“I mean…” Carl seemed nervous, wary of Yvan’s temper, “are you just… letting go of Ms. Thompson?”

To live by merely hearing news about her, never again disrupting her peaceful life, never again forcefully entering her world.

Just lurking in the shadows, watching with those dark, night-like eyes.

Yvan remained silent for a long moment before saying, “She’s doing well now… Better off without me.”

He just needed to silently repay his debts, not asking for Matilda’s forgiveness, but hoping… not to be tormented by regret in his nightmares.

Someone was still out to get them. Rachel had already made her move, the truth was out—what else? What else could Matilda’s enemies want?

Yvan sighed, massaging his temples, recalling their search for information on Orson, which had also been tampered with.

Was this a coincidence?

Could Matilda truly have a link to the Jungle Union?

The office was silent, dusk approaching, shadows slowly enveloping every corner of the city.

Everyone… was about to be swallowed by darkness.

...

Matilda got dressed up for the evening, and Criss, seeing her, smiled approvingly. “Yvan would die of jealousy if he saw you looking this stunning.”
