Just as Matilda finished her sentence, the roller coaster reached its peak, and then it took a nosedive straight down!
"Whooooa!!!"
The feeling of weightlessness and the rush of speed hit Matilda all at once. It felt like she was breaking free from gravity, about to soar into the sky, only to be yanked back down by the safety harness. This mind-numbing thrill forced a loud scream from her lungs, a bizarre way of venting all her pent-up emotions.
When the ride finally came to a stop, Matilda's hair was a complete mess. As they got off, Logan burst into laughter, "Mom, you're just like Uncle Gideon when it comes to roller coasters."
Gideon too had screamed his lungs out during the ride, but the mention of 'Uncle' made Matilda's head pound with a sudden ache.
Flashes of Gideon lying cold in a hospital bed crossed her mind. She massaged her temples as voices from the past swirled around her.
"Matilda, just calm down..."
"If I were you, Yvan, I'd be laughing even in my dreams!"
"I hope you rot in hell..."
Who... Who was it...
Who had destroyed everything for her...
In that moment, a buzzing filled her ears, and a wave of emotions overwhelmed Matilda, causing her to step back, tears streaming down her face for reasons she couldn't fathom.
It was as if she was reliving past traumas all over again.
Touching her face, Logan looked worried, "Mom, did you remember something just now?"
Matilda, trying to compose herself and suppress the pain, forced a smile at Logan, "It's nothing, just got a bit overwhelmed. I'll be fine in a bit."
"Also, most of the people on the roller coaster were our guys, just to make sure the young master was safe. We had eyes on them the whole time."
"..."
Yvan covered his face with his hand, amused and slightly exasperated at his subordinates' extreme measures.
Carl, noticing Yvan's attention on the carousel, suggested, "Mr. Boyd, maybe you should try that one? It would get you closer..."
Yvan gave Carl a look as if he had lost his mind, "You want me, an adult man, to ride a carousel?"
Carl, sweating bullets, tried to explain, "I thought since you wanted to be closer to them, maybe sitting behind them would work..."
The blend of amusement and absurdity in the situation was palpable, reflecting the lengths Yvan would go to for a glimpse of Matilda and Logan, yet maintaining his distance in a place filled with joy and laughter.
