No sooner had Colleen spoken than Hala charged at her with a baton, swinging it straight for her face. The society lady dodged backward, her voice quivering with fear, "Rebellion! This is outright rebellion!"
"Your son dared to assault someone, and you think we don't have the courage to fight back?!"
The media at the door rushed in all at once, reporters shouting as they switched on their cameras, "Brawl! Mrs. Farrell's son involved in a mob fight!"
"Lock them up! Arrest him!"
"Everybody stop!"
Yvan burst into the room, his voice thunderous. Surveying the chaotic scene, his face registered shock. "Do you all want to end up behind bars?!"
At the sound of Yvan's voice, Matilda trembled. Why had he come?
Mason stood behind several policemen, pressing a bandaged wound on the back of his head, with some blood not yet dried staining his palm. He clicked his tongue, drawing Yvan's attention.
Yvan looked at Mason. "What did you do?"
Seeing Yvan, Colleen felt backed up again and moved to his side. "Yvan, you're here. I was just trying to take my son home, and these people won't let it go..."
"Why won't they let it go?" Hala confronted Colleen with the baton, unafraid of Yvan's frowning presence beside her. "Tell us, where's the injustice? Your son attempted to assault a girl, shouldn't he be locked up for that? You just want to take your son and leave? Do you think you're above the law? If your daughter was harassed by some man, would you be so forgiving?"
Colleen's lips trembled with rage. "This is unreasonable. My son would never..."
"Then let him speak for himself!"
"Speak up! Were you drunk and did you lay hands on Matilda? Did you pin her down, tear at her clothes?"
With every word Hala uttered, Matilda shivered, as if recalling a dark shadow. Orson, holding her tight, lifted his head, his eyes fierce as a wolf's, fixed on Yvan.
Yvan couldn't believe it. Mason... capable of such an act?
In the end, Hala slammed the baton down with force, "Enough with your saviors, as if you're the only ones who can call on one!"
Luna stood there, smirking, "Looks like I need to make a call for my brother to come."
Who was her brother?
Ten minutes later, the imposing figure of Cyprian Layton, the head of Sea City's elite special forces, Wind Deity, walked in, clad in full military uniform, with a chilling air and a mocking smile. "Just passing by. Heard someone was messing with my little sister?"
Damn!
Everyone immediately looked at Matilda, wrapped in Orson's arms.
Seeing that Cyprian wasn't giving Yvan any face, Colleen panicked. With so much media around, the story could be suppressed, but the Farrell family's reputation couldn't afford a hit, and her son definitely couldn't go to jail...
She immediately turned teary-eyed and pleaded with Matilda, her demeanor as convincing as an actress, painting herself as the pitiful figure, "Matilda, why hold on to this? I was overprotective of my son in my haste. Forgiveness is divine, and Mason was just too drunk..."
Now she was playing the sympathy card. Hala feared Matilda might soften and let them off the hook.
But Matilda's complexion was still ghastly; there was no sign she intended to back down.
"Matilda, your aunt has already said so much..." Yvan felt that this scandal couldn't spread and wanted to stabilize the situation first. He thought Matilda could demand an apology from Mason later, so he hesitantly spoke up, "How about I apologize on Mason's behalf for now, and we can sort this out later..."
"Yvan, do you always enjoy playing the hero?"
Matilda nestled in Orson's embrace, her laugh tinged with scorn, "Mason's actions, whether he grovels, goes to jail, or apologizes, are his business. I'm the victim, and whether I forgive him is my decision. Who do you think you are, standing here trying to resolve things for me?"
Colleen's face couldn't hide her indignation. "Don't push too far!"
"The same goes for you!" Matilda's eyes were still brimming with tears, shocked she could be so violated by Mason. Her voice was raw with emotion, "You want to settle this quietly? Well, I refuse! Why should I grant your wish? I'm not so magnanimous to just let it go after being comforted. Forgiveness where it's due? I flatly refuse to give it!"
