Since Isabella was mostly fine, she likely wouldn’t need to stay the night here.
The porridge was still simmering in the pot. Freya sat for a while before heading downstairs. Aunt Sara was in the kitchen, saying,
“I’ll keep an eye on the fire. Madam, you must be tired, so please sit down and rest.”
When Freya left the kitchen, she saw Matteo sitting on the living room sofa reading the newspaper.
When he saw her, he glanced over, but quickly returned his attention to the paper.
Freya hesitated for a moment.
In the past, she would have sat down next to him, trying to spend some quiet time together without disturbing him.

With that thought, she turned and headed upstairs, and Matteo didn’t call after her.

Freya had just gone upstairs when Isabella woke up, looking pale and coming out of her room to find her. “Mommy, I’m hungry, is the porridge ready?”
“Almost done.” Freya asked Aunt Sara, “Is it still cooking?”
Aunt Sara smiled, “No, it’s done.”
Freya felt relieved and went back into the kitchen. After five or six minutes, she popped her head out and said to Isabella, “Bella, the porridge is ready.”
Freya served the porridge and was about to leave when she noticed that Matteo had followed her
