Startled by the sound, Sophie suddenly turned around.
The sight of Sophie's abrupt movement also startled the maid, who paused before asking, "Ms. Sophie, what brings you to the second floor?"
"I... was looking for something Jenna left behind."
"Something of Ms. Jenna's?" The maid entered, puzzled. "I don't believe Ms. Jenna left anything behind."
"How can you be sure?"
"Because Ms. Jenna didn't stay long that day, and I checked the room when I cleaned. I didn't find anything left behind."
"Were you here that day?"
Facing Sophie's inquiry, the maid nodded, explaining, "I was on duty that night. The next day, I noticed Ms. Jenna's room seemed untouched, so I just did a quick check and tidy up. It's unlikely anything was left behind. Perhaps you're mistaken?"
"You were on duty that night. Do you know when Ms. Jenna left?"
After thinking it over, the maid replied, "The young master asked me the same thing the next day, but I really didn't notice when Ms. Jenna left. It wasn't until the next morning, when the young master asked me to bring breakfast to Ms. Jenna, that I realized she had already gone."
"So, you didn't realize Ms. Jenna was gone until the next day?"
The maid nodded.
Sophie frowned.
"Ms. Jenna hasn't come into any trouble, has she? The young master seemed quite anxious that day."
"It's nothing. She's been found."
Sophie fell silent for a moment, then seemed to recall something and asked, "Did the master return home that night?"
