James set the photo frame on the table and placed the ring right in front of it. From here on out, it was something best not seen.
It was late at night at the Burke Estate. Sophie was curled up at the edge of the bed, while Colby woke up in the early hours. He felt a hand holding his and was startled. Seeing Sophie beside him, he thought he was still dreaming.
“Sophie?” His voice was low and a bit choked.
Sophie blinked sleepily, and when she saw Colby awake, she gave him her usual sweet smile. “Awake now?”
Hearing this, Colby realized he wasn't dreaming and pulled Sophie into a hug. But this movement tugged at Sophie's wound, making her gasp, “Colby! You're hurting me!”
Colby immediately realized his mistake and gently released her, looking concerned. “Did your wound open up? Let me see.”
He carefully began to unbutton her shirt. Sure enough, there was a bit of blood seeping through on her shoulder. Kiran’s bullet had left a nasty wound. Even though it was just a flesh wound, it couldn't handle rough movements.
Seeing Colby so worried, Sophie teased, “I thought you weren't scared of anything, Colby. Aren’t you worried about getting laughed at for this?”
He frowned seriously, “Laughing with injuries like that? Let me treat your wound.”
Colby hopped out of bed, grabbed the first aid kit, and started tending to Sophie's wounds once he unwrapped the gauze. As the gauze peeled away, it stuck painfully to her skin, and Sophie broke out in a cold sweat.
Seeing her discomfort, Colby popped a candy into her mouth. “Here, have some candy. It'll help with the pain.”
The sweet fruit candy dissolved on her tongue, and Sophie managed a small smile. “Colby, what century are you from? You have anesthetics and you give me candy instead?”
Colby realized his oversight and quickly dropped the gauze, dashed to the door, and shouted down the hallway, “William! Get over here!”
