Briony frowned, her thoughts troubled.
Could the rumors be true?
“Do you want me to go in and check things out for you?” Lorna offered.
Briony considered for a moment. “No. I want to see her myself.”
She still couldn’t believe Mary would do something like secretly have a child.
“If you want to meet her, that’s fine,” Lorna replied, “but I wouldn’t recommend going alone.”
“I have a bodyguard.”
“How many?”
“Just one.”
“That’s not enough,” Lorna said bluntly. “There are at least a dozen private guards at that estate, and Nortia’s weapon regulations aren’t as strict as they are back home. If you try to force your way in, there’s a good chance you’ll get shot.”
Briony fell silent.
“Here’s what I suggest,” Lorna continued. “You pay me a finder’s fee, I’ll track down Mary and have her get in touch with you so you can hear it from her directly.”
At this point, Briony realized it was the only viable option. She agreed.
…
It was a full day before Briony finally received Mary’s call.
On the phone, Mary still called her “Briony,” but her voice had lost the bright, innocent cheerfulness it once held.
The moment Briony heard that change, she knew—the rumors were true.
