“Dorothea, you should go home and get some rest.” Ladd had only just finished saying the words when Dorothea went limp and fainted. She had been on edge for so long with no proper rest, and the moment her nerves finally loosened up, she just blacked out from exhaustion.
She didn’t stay unconscious for long. The doctors, careful because of her pregnancy, wouldn’t risk giving her any medication. When Dorothea woke up, it was already the next morning.
Carmen was right by her side, keeping watch. “Dorothea, you’re awake.”
Dorothea blinked the sleep from her eyes. “Carmen, what time is it?”
“It’s just six,” Carmen said softly. “Try to sleep a little more. You were worn out yesterday and the doctor told everyone to let you rest. Don’t worry, your husband’s okay. I just checked in on him.”
Carmen knew what was on her mind and made sure to say what mattered most.
Dorothea nodded. “Thank you, Carmen. Did you stay up all night for me? I feel better now. I want to go see him.”
Carmen walked with her to the special care unit. The hallway was quiet, and in Latham’s room, all they could hear was the steady hum of the machines.
Latham laid perfectly still on the white hospital bed, an oxygen mask over his strong, handsome face. The broad shoulders that always made her feel safe were now hidden under layers of thick bandages, with a faint, dark red stain peeking through.
With her mask on, Dorothea reached out as if to touch his face, but her hand lingered at the back of his. His skin felt cool. She wrapped her fingers around his and held on tight.
“Babe, can you wake up for me?” Her voice was gentle, trembling. “Shipley and Bonnie miss you so much. They want to hear you talk again.”
“If you wake up... I promise, no more fights, no more stubbornness. Please?”
She was pleading, her voice full of hope and worry. “As long as you wake up, I’ll do whatever you want.”
Latham didn’t move, still lost somewhere far away, but the lines on his heart monitor showed that he was fighting to stay with her. Dorothea’s chest ached, a sharp and aching pain spreading right through her heart. Tears filled her eyes, but she didn’t dare make a sound, afraid that even her crying might disturb him.
