A sudden crash echoed from the bathroom.
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. He tossed aside his files and was on his feet in an instant. “Madeline, are you okay?”
Her voice came from behind the door, shaky but trying to sound casual. “I’m fine. Just got a leg cramp and slipped a little.”
He frowned, paused only a moment, then pushed the door open.
Madeline was on the floor, bracing herself on her hands, trying to stand. The steamy bathroom was thick with heat, but as the door swung wide, a chill swept in. She looked up, startled, meeting Julian’s gaze.
For a split second she just stared, frozen, hands flailing as she tried to decide what she should be covering.
“You…”
Julian’s brows were drawn tight. He barely hesitated. Without thinking about the water slick on her skin, he bent down, scooped her up, and settled her gently on the counter.
Madeline scrambled for a towel and clutched it to her chest.
Julian knelt down, his hand circling her calf. “Where’s the cramp?”
“My… left leg,” she murmured, cheeks burning.
His touch grew gentle as he began to massage her leg, concentration written all over his face.
Madeline sucked in a sharp breath. “Wait, that hurts.”
“Is it getting better?”
“It’s still cramping… ouch…” She steadied herself with a hand on his shoulder.
Julian eased up, working her muscle with a softer touch. “How’s that?”
“It’s almost gone,” she said quietly.
He let go of her leg. The shower was still running, and after just a few minutes in the bathroom, his crisp white shirt was already soaked through.
He looked up at her, catching her gaze. Her eyes were wet and shining.
Madeline’s long lashes fluttered. “Thank you…”
Madeline’s fingers trembled where they gripped the counter.
“Julian, I…” Her words were lost as his lips found hers again.
The towel slipped away from her chest. She gasped, clutching at him.
Julian’s eyes were dark with desire, never leaving her face. “Marry me again. Let’s start over. I’ll give you everything you want.”
Madeline’s eyes widened, panic flickering across her face. She pulled her shoulders in, pushing at his chest. “Julian, just calm down…”
“I can’t,” he breathed.
She had a hold on him, and she probably didn’t even realize it. He had no control when it came to her.
His lips traced a hot path down her neck, moving lower.
Madeline’s lashes trembled. She bit down on her lip, but she couldn’t stop the soft moan that escaped her.
