Claire was on her way to the ancestral hall to accept her punishment when she bumped into Sam and Brendan.

Brendan made no secret of his sneer. He shot Claire a cold smile. “Well, look who it is. My dear niece, you really don’t hold back, do you? Poisoning someone... and almost killing your own sister. Are you proud of yourself?”

Claire swallowed her anger and tried to keep her voice calm. “I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about. Poison? That has nothing to do with me.”

Brendan let out a sharp laugh. “You can drop the act. Sure, there’s no hard proof from tonight, but we all know what went down. If it wasn’t you, then who?”

Claire tightened her grip on her palm. “Like you said, there’s no evidence. So maybe stop accusing me for no reason.”

She turned to leave, still fuming, but after a few steps, she paused and glanced back at them. “You two seem desperate to find someone to go against me. Just be careful. If you pick someone too ambitious, you might lose the whole Ballard family to her.”

Brendan replied with a cool smile. “You should focus on watching your own back.”

Claire scoffed and walked off, head held high.

Brendan folded his arms and shook his head as she disappeared down the hall. “Where did she even get that vicious streak? My sister always did things the right way. Claire’s nothing like her.”

Sam narrowed his eyes. “Maybe she takes after Drew.”

Brendan’s smirk grew wider. “Drew? I still don’t get what Shelly ever saw in that guy. Sure, he’s got a nice face, but that’s about it.”

Right on cue, footsteps echoed behind them. Drew walked past, catching every word.

Drew and Brendan locked eyes.

Brendan didn’t bother to hide his amusement. If anything, he looked even more pleased. “Well, if it isn’t my brother-in-law. Shouldn’t you be at the hospital with your daughter?”

Sam shot Brendan a look, clearly annoyed, but didn’t step in.

Drew’s face was stormy. He knew the Ballard brothers never liked him. Staying in their house meant he had to keep the peace, so he just kept walking, jaw clenched.

Brendan muttered, “Coward.”
