Her two uncles really had nothing better to do. They were just here for the drama, soaking up every second.
Madeline wasn’t about to let herself get tossed out so easily. She stood her ground. “Hold on a second.”
“I was invited here by Mr. SamBallard. No matter what, I’m still a guest. Isn’t it a little out of line to throw out a guest?”
Claire’s eyes narrowed. Of course. Those two troublemakers were stirring things up again.
She stepped forward, her gaze icy and sharp on Madeline. “I don’t believe your words. Why would he ever bring home an impostor?”
Claire kept calling Madeline an impostor. Maybe she was trying to convince everyone else, or maybe she was just trying to convince herself.
Madeline smirked. “Maybe he’s got questions about your identity. That’s the only reason he’d want me here.”
That hit a nerve. A flicker of something dangerous flashed across Claire’s face, but she kept her expression steady.
“You really just won’t quit, will you? The last time you tried to pretend to replace me and become Ms. Ballard, it didn’t work. Now you’re trying to get my uncles involved, hoping to stir up trouble. That’s even more reason for me to get rid of you. What are you all waiting for? Throw her out.”
Madeline watched the guards coming her way, completely unfazed. “Why are you so guilty?”
Claire gave a cold laugh. “You think I’m guilty? I see some fake like you in front of me and I want you gone. That’s just common sense.”
“Is it? You keep calling me a fake, but you’re the one who seems desperate to have me out of your sight.” Madeline smiled, her voice light.
Claire’s brow tightened. “I just can’t stand you. Looking at your face makes me sick.”
Madeline let go of her wrist. “If you say so. Whatever helps you sleep at night.”
Claire scoffed, catching sight of everyone watching them. She realized she’d lost her cool. As the Ballard family’s heiress, she couldn’t be the one to get her hands dirty in public.
She took a breath, smoothed her sleeves, and calmed herself. Her gaze settled back on Madeline. “You’re clever, I’ll give you that. But you’re wasting it on the wrong things. If you really think you can keep using that face to steal my life, you can forget it. I’ll never let it happen.”
Madeline just stood there, silent and steady, not giving an inch.
“So, are you leaving on your own, or do I need to have someone drag you out? The Ballard estate isn’t a playground for you.”
A calm, deep voice came from behind them, cutting through the tension. “If you want to throw someone out, you’d better make sure you have the right to do it.”
