“Hmm?” Madeline turned to look at him. “You’re having trouble sleeping again? You shouldn’t be. I gave you those pills. If you take them every day like I said, you shouldn’t be lying awake all night.”
Julian let out a sigh. “It’s not about that. It’s knowing my wife is just in the next room, but I can’t even hold you or kiss you. Who could sleep under those conditions?”
Madeline gave him a little smile. “Let’s stop right there. Ex-wife, thank you very much.”
“We’ll get back together eventually,” Julian said, trailing behind her, his tone easy and sure.
Madeline pressed her lips together and didn’t bother arguing. The house staff had already set out a beautiful breakfast. Christian was nowhere to be seen, but Matthew and his family were already at the table.
They were still upset after Julian had basically kicked them out to the guest wing last night. Apparently, they’d even gone to Christian to complain, but he hadn’t taken their side. That just made them even more annoyed.
After breakfast, the two kids were sent off to school. Julian and Madeline both went their separate ways to work.
Julian tried to offer her a ride, but Madeline turned him down.
She had just arrived in front of her office building when several cars suddenly cut her off and blocked her way.
Madeline felt her forehead twitch as she took in the scene, totally thrown off.
Two middle-aged men climbed out of the cars and walked up to her. One of them looked her over and asked, “Madeline Monroe?”
Madeline stayed cautious, nodding. “That’s me. Who are you?”
The older man, who looked especially stern, spoke first. “I might be your uncle.”
The other man jumped in, “And I might be your uncle too.”
Plastic surgery disaster?
Sam gave Brendan a look, clearly telling him to cut it out, then turned to Madeline and got straight to the point. “To be honest, we don’t buy the idea that two people in the world could look exactly alike by pure coincidence. But the Ballard family is careful, and we can’t ignore even the smallest doubt. We came to see you today first because both of us are leaning toward believing you’re the real one, and second, to invite you to the Ballard family banquet in two days.”
Madeline glanced at the invitation Sam handed her, then looked up. “You mean me?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
Madeline let out a soft laugh. “If I’m not wrong, the Ballard family is going to announce the return of their real daughter at this banquet. Am I really supposed to show up?”
After all, the other woman was the one they seemed to trust more. If she went to the banquet, there would be two identical Ms. Ballards in the same room. Wasn’t that just asking for trouble?
Sam looked at her and smiled, mysterious and confident. “No one can say for sure if she’s real or not, and the same goes for you. If she has the right to be there, why shouldn’t you?”
