The Ballard family was like a prize everyone wanted; they were all waiting for a chance to take a bite. Taking it over wouldn’t be easy. It would take time. First, she had to make sure Madeline didn’t get in her way again.
…
Back in the Capital.
Madeline sat in the car, her head resting on her hand, her gaze fixed somewhere outside the window. She looked lost in thought.
Julian glanced at her from the driver’s seat. “Still thinking about the Ballard family?”
His question snapped her out of it. She looked over at him. “That woman who had surgery is Drew’s real daughter.”
Julian raised an eyebrow. “So you’re not?”
Madeline nodded.
He let out a soft laugh. “Then you should be celebrating.”
“Hm?”
“You’re finally done with the Monroe family. That’s worth celebrating, isn’t it?”
Madeline managed a small smile. “Yeah, I guess it is.”
Having a family like that had always felt like a curse. Now that she was free, it should have felt like a relief.
But…
She pressed her lips together and looked down. The happiness just wouldn’t come.
She thought she had a grandmother who loved her. Now, even that was gone. She had no idea where her mother was, and she didn’t know who her father was, either.
Madeline forced a bitter smile and turned to look out the window. The city lights blurred by until she realized something was off. She turned back to Julian.
“Where are you taking me?”
“The Grayson place,” Julian said, as if it was obvious. “You’re living there with us from now on.”
Madeline looked into his eyes and fell silent. The car crossed a wide avenue and turned into the Grayson family estate.
They passed a big fountain in the garden and stopped in front of the main house. A staff noticed Julian’s car and hurried out to open the door.
“Come on.”
Julian’s voice was soft, but he didn’t really give her a choice as he reached over and unbuckled her seatbelt.
Madeline shrank back a little as the belt came loose.
She pressed her lips together, not quite sure what to say. Julian arched an eyebrow. “Need me to carry you out?”
He grinned. “If I did that, my grandfather would probably chase us both around with his cane, yelling about how shameless we are.”
Madeline sighed and got out of the car, resigned.
Julian took her hand and led her inside. “Don’t worry, you won’t have to stay here forever. Once things settle down, I’ll take you and the kids and we’ll move out.”
