Madeline stared at Grandma Monroe, wishing desperately that the old lady truly had no idea what was happening. She still clung to the hope that her suspicions were wrong, that her grandmother was still the same person who had always loved her.
Drew looked just as confused, his brow furrowed. "Seriously, what’s going on here?"
Maxwell cleared his throat. "Everyone, you’re Madeline’s family, the people who watched her grow up. We invited you here to help figure out which one of these two is pretending to be someone they’re not."
Without waiting for anyone else to speak, Maxwell turned straight to Grandma Monroe. "Mrs. Monroe, could you please take a look and help us out?"
Grandma Monroe seemed to freeze for a second, then slowly let her gaze settle on the two girls.
Claire broke into a small, careful smile. She leaned forward and pulled out a pendant, making sure everyone could see it. "Grandma, it’s me. I’m Madeline."
Grandma Monroe’s eyes flickered as she looked at Claire. Claire shot her a quick, meaningful glance.
She seemed to catch the signal, then shifted her eyes to the real Madeline. For a moment, she acted like she was studying her closely. Then she reached out and took Madeline’s hand, wrapping it in her own.
Madeline felt the familiar warmth of her grandmother’s hand, but the comfort she used to feel was gone.
Grandma Monroe held Madeline’s hand for a moment, then took Claire’s too. She hesitated, thinking it over, then let go of Madeline and turned to Claire.
"This is my granddaughter, Madeline," she said, her voice steady and sure. "I gave her that pendant myself. There’s no mistake."
Madeline had seen it coming, but her chest still ached painfully at Grandma Monroe’s words.
Of course.
