“Is Mom okay?”

“Your mother is dying. That woman you care so much about nearly killed her.” His grandfather’s voice was almost a shout. “Get here right now.”

Julian hung up without saying a word. He told Miles to pull up every bit of security footage nearby and to call the police to check all the cars that had passed through. Then he rushed straight to the hospital.

He arrived at the door to the room in no time, still catching his breath from running, but he didn’t look flustered at all. His grandfather sat outside the door, both hands resting on his cane, his whole presence commanding and cold.

Julian glanced at him, but just then a doctor stepped out of the room. Julian reached out, stopping the doctor. “How’s my mother?”

“Don’t worry, Mr. Grayson. Mrs. Grayson’s injuries are minor. The cut wasn’t deep, and the bleeding was under control before she even got here. She’s not in danger. She’s just been through a terrible shock and is exhausted, so she hasn’t woken up yet. She’ll wake up once she’s recovered a little.”

“Okay. Thank you.” Relief flooded Julian, but his brows drew together as he turned to look at Christian, who hadn’t moved from his seat.

“Was it really necessary to trick me into coming here?” Julian’s voice was low, his eyes clouded with anger.

Christian’s jaw was clenched tight, his eyes locked on Julian and full of frustration. “Would you have come if I hadn’t? Madeline hurt your mother. She ran off. What, were you just going to go chasing after her?”

Julian glanced at his watch. It had been more than three hours since he’d last heard from Madeline. His lips pressed into a thin line. “Grandpa, this was Helene’s doing. Don’t blame Madeline for everything. She’s been kidnapped. She’s in real danger right now. I need to find her. Please, just take care of Mom for me.”

“Julian!”

Christian’s angry voice cut through the air, stopping Julian in his tracks as he tried to leave. “Where do you think you’re going? To find Madeline?”

“She needs help.”
