It was the middle of the night. Helene was locked inside a hospital room, surrounded by the strange and unsettling sounds of other patients. She curled up in a corner, pressed against a wall covered in weird graffiti.
Suddenly, the door opened.
Helene flinched, her whole body tensing up. She didn’t dare lift her head.
A woman stood in the doorway, watching her silently for what felt like ages before finally stepping inside. She wore a mask and a baseball cap, her face hidden in the darkness.
“Do you want to get back at Madeline?” the woman asked. She crouched down, her slender fingers gently lifting Helene’s pale face so their eyes met.
Helene couldn’t even think straight anymore. All she heard was “get back,” and that was enough. Hatred surged in her chest, and she nodded without hesitation. “Yes. I want to. I want revenge.”
The woman smiled, then reached out and patted Helene’s head, like she was a little pet who’d done something right.
“Good. Can you listen to me and do what I say?”
“Yes!” Helene didn’t care who this woman was or what she wanted. As long as she had the power to help her, Helene would do anything.
She had nothing left to lose. The only thing keeping her going was the thought of making Madeline pay.
“I’ll figure out a way to get you out tomorrow. Just be good, okay?”
Helene looked up, staring into the woman’s eyes. There was something familiar about them, and her voice too. But none of that mattered right now. She just nodded desperately. As long as she could escape, she would agree to anything.
“You’re so sweet. Now, try to get some sleep.”
Somehow, the woman was suddenly holding a syringe. She didn’t ask for permission. She just pressed it to Helene’s arm and pushed the plunger.
Under the cold glow of the moon, Helene’s mind started to drift. Her eyelids grew heavy. The last thing she saw was the woman’s shadow fading into the darkness.
Every instinct screamed that this woman was dangerous. She wouldn’t help Helene for nothing. She was probably just using her. But Helene didn’t care. As long as Madeline suffered in the end, she was willing to give up everything, even her life.
