“I’ll wait for you downstairs,” Julian said.
Madeline just shot back, “Don’t bother,” and hung up. She glanced down at him for a moment, then turned away, determined to finish packing up and walk out like he wasn’t even there.
Julian waited, but after a few minutes, he started worrying she’d find a way to slip past him. He decided to go upstairs and check.
The elevator doors slid open, and the second he stepped out, a scream cut through the darkness.
It’s Madeline.
His heart jumped. He broke into a run, heading straight for her office.
The lights in the office area were off. Madeline must have been shutting everything down. The whole place was pitch black.
Julian hurried through the dark, searching for her. He finally spotted her pressed against the wall just outside her office, every muscle tense.
He rushed over, relief flooding him when he saw she was okay. He followed her gaze and caught sight of a shadow moving in the darkness.
In that huge, silent office, seeing a shadow glide by with no face and no sound was almost creepy.
“Ms. Monroe…” a voice called out, finally breaking the silence. The shadow stepped closer. “Ms. Monroe? Are you alright? I just came back for my phone. I forgot it earlier.”
Madeline let out a shaky breath. When she saw it was just someone from work, she put a hand over her chest and waved him off. “I’m fine.”
The guy looked nervously between Madeline and Julian, then nodded at the door. “I’ll just head out, then?”
“Go ahead,” Madeline said.
Julian reached out to steady her. “Did that scare you?”
“A little.” She tried to pull her hand away, but he wouldn’t let go. She glared at him.
He just held on tighter.
She frowned. “Why did you come up here?”
“I thought you’d try to run away.”
Madeline just stared at him. He really did know her too well.
Julian raised an eyebrow. “Did I guess right?”
She yanked her hand free and strode off. Julian followed, not hurrying. “I’m leaving on a business trip tomorrow.”
She ignored him, but he didn’t seem to mind. He just kept talking as he trailed after her. When they turned the corner, Madeline suddenly picked up speed.
