Julian’s patience was running thin as he took the stairs two at a time. Downstairs, Lucy sat on the sofa, her face as cold as marble, barely sparing him a glance.

“Mom.”

Lucy put her mug down with a sharp clink, her expression unyielding. Julian frowned, frustration simmering just below the surface. He’d only gone to take a shower. Did that somehow make him public enemy number one? Why was everyone suddenly treating him like he’d done something awful?

“What’s going on with you and Helene?” Lucy wasted no time. “Did you two sleep together?”

Julian blinked, caught off guard by the blunt question. “What are you talking about?”

Lucy turned to the servant nearby. “Tell him.”

Julian’s eyes shifted to the servant, who looked like she wanted to disappear. She fidgeted, her cheeks turning pink as she tried to get the words out.

“When Ms. Monroe arrived, she saw Ms. Fortner… coming out of your room without any clothes on. You and Ms. Fortner… well…”

She trailed off, too embarrassed to finish. She looked barely out of her teens and clearly wanted to be anywhere but here.

Lucy’s anger burned brighter. She’d had enough of Helene and wanted her as far away from Julian as possible. Deep down, she just wanted Julian and Madeline back together. For the sake of the kids, for their family. She could see Julian regretted the past and wanted to make things right with Madeline.

But what was all this? Madeline had seen the whole thing. The way she had rushed off said it all. She still cared, and she was hurting.

If Julian went back to Helene again, Lucy knew she just couldn’t accept it.

Julian stared at the servant for a long moment before looking away, irritation creeping up inside him. So this was why Madeline was upset. He honestly didn’t know if he wanted to laugh or just scream.

“Can you explain yourself? Do you even want things to work out with Madeline? If you do, stop with the drama. Can’t you just control yourself?” Lucy’s voice was sharp and loud.

“Okay,” Julian muttered, already heading for the door.
