Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 441

Madeline handed Brenda a fresh set of clothes while Julian took the kids into the living room.

Five minutes later, everyone was there, just kind of glancing at each other, not really sure what to say.

Brenda looked at Julian, then at Madeline, then at their little family. She couldn’t help but feel like a total outsider. The way they’d acted at dinner earlier kept replaying in her head... Was there something going on between them? Were they about to get back together?

Brenda decided it was probably best to stay out of it. She grabbed her purse and stood up, trying to make her exit as smooth as possible. “Okay, I get it. I really do. I’ll just come by another time.”

Before anyone could stop her, she was already halfway out the door. Madeline watched her go, thinking Brenda could probably win a medal for escaping awkward situations.

Madeline turned back to Julian. “You’re really planning to stay here tonight?”

He shrugged, lips curving up just a little. “If I go back out there, I’ll freeze. Show me some mercy.”

Madeline nodded. She wasn’t that cold-hearted. “You can stay in Noah and Oliver’s room. I already got it ready. The bed’s big enough.”

She pointed him toward the room, then took Noah and Oliver with her to her own.

Julian watched her walk away, a smile tugging at his mouth. The kids made a pretty good excuse, but he knew he shouldn’t push his luck with her.

Once inside, Julian leaned against the balcony door. He held a cigarette between his fingers but didn’t light it, maybe not wanting the smell to get into the kids’ things.

Madeline was lying in bed with the boys, chatting quietly. They drifted off pretty quickly, but Madeline just stared at the ceiling. Sleep felt impossible with everything on her mind.

Around two in the morning, she got up to get some water. She moved through the dark, not bothering to turn on any lights. The moonlight coming in through the windows was enough to guide her.

She poured herself a glass and turned to head back, but walked straight into someone. It felt like running into a wall.

Julian had taken off his jacket. His sweater was soft, and his familiar scent hit her all at once, making her heart flip. Before she could react, he leaned in and pressed the lightest kiss to her lips, catching her totally off guard.

Her hand shook and she spilled half her water.

“Can’t sleep?” Julian’s voice was low and a little playful. “Wanna do something with me for a bit?”
