“Yes, that’s something I can’t do.” Julian’s eyes were serious, and his arm around her waist pulled her in just a little closer.
Madeline hesitated, then gave him a soft, almost indifferent smile. The way his eyes looked at her, was so full of emotion, her heart skipped a beat and she felt a little lightheaded.
She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but the words just wouldn’t come out.
Julian leaned in slowly, his gaze locked on her lips. Madeline snapped out of her daze and turned her head away, dodging him at the last second. He stared at her with a heat in his eyes, but he didn’t push her.
“You might not be able to do that, but letting me go shouldn’t be so hard, right?” Madeline let out a sigh, her tone gentle.
Julian let go of her right away. As his arms fell away, Madeline realized how much she’d been relying on his strength. She had to brace herself against the wall, pressing a hand to her chest and taking a deep breath.
She hadn’t even noticed how weak she still was until now. Without Julian holding her up, her knees almost buckled and she felt dizzy for a few seconds, but then the world came back into focus.
Julian caught the change in her expression immediately. He reached for her, concern sharp in his voice. “Are you feeling okay?”
Madeline waved him off, trying to steady herself. “It’s nothing. I was stuck in bed for two months, so my body’s still a little out of it. I just got tired, but I’m fine now.”
All the warmth in Julian’s face disappeared. He didn’t say a word, just bent down and swept her up in his arms, striding toward the door.
“Wait, what are you doing?” Madeline yelped, grabbing for his neck without thinking.
“We’re going to the hospital. You need to get checked out.”
They stepped outside into the crowd. People were everywhere, and Madeline felt way too exposed, being carried like this. She tapped Julian’s shoulder, her voice urgent. “Put me down. I already saw a doctor before I came back. Seriously, I’m fine. You were just holding me so tight, I couldn’t catch my breath. That’s all. Let me down.”
“Are you sure?” Julian looked at her, clearly not convinced.
“I’m sure.”
