Her voice faded away, leaving only silence behind. Julian rubbed his temples, trying to clear his head.
“Boss?”
He didn’t look up. “Check if Madeline has a twin sister.”
Miles stepped forward. “Boss, Ms. Monroe doesn’t have a twin.”
He had already dug through Madeline’s background more times than he could count. There was no twin. And even if there was, why would a twin go to all that trouble to pretend to be Madeline, hurt Helene’s child, and then frame her for it?
Miles hesitated before adding, “But Boss, Ms. Monroe does have a half-sister, Raine. They don’t look alike though.”
So the woman in the video couldn’t be Raine either.
Julian stood up and wandered over to the window, frowning at the city lights. Something didn’t add up. There had to be a detail he missed, some crack in the story he just wasn’t seeing.
He grabbed his phone and left the study without another word.
He almost bumped into Lucy in the hallway. She called after him, “Julian, it’s getting late. Where are you off to?”
“I have something to take care of.”
She watched him go, worry etched across her face. Miles had told her Julian was working himself to the bone again, never stopping, never resting—just like before. If he wasn’t at the office, he was out searching for Madeline. Everyone else had already accepted that Madeline was gone for good, but Julian just couldn’t let go.
Lucy knew her son well. If he didn’t find Madeline, he’d never move on. But if Madeline really was gone… what then? The fear of watching him break apart hung over her like a shadow.
