He wasn’t just telling her to leave. He wanted her gone and expected her to give up her two sons as well.
Madeline looked down, a cold glint flickering in her eyes.
He was offering her a cushy life, a ticket abroad, but the price was staying away from Julian and leaving her boys.
Too bad for him. She didn’t care about his money or his so-called kindness. And she would never give up her children.
“What if I say no?”
“Then you’ll face the consequences.”
Madeline watched the scenery blur past as the car picked up speed, heading somewhere isolated.
“So I only get two choices. Leave or die. That about right?”
“That’s correct,” the old man replied with a calm nod.
Christian honestly didn’t see a problem. He’d given her a generous offer. If she didn’t take it, he’d just erase her from the picture.
Madeline leaned back and met his eyes. “I don’t think you’ll actually kill me.”
“Oh? And why’s that? Go on, tell me,” he said, suddenly looking intrigued.
“Because you still need me.”
He waited, silent, signaling for her to explain.
“You want me dead because you think I matter to Julian now. You can’t stand the idea of your grandson caring about a woman.”
“But that’s exactly why you need me, isn’t it? You want to use me to keep Julian under control. If I disappear, do you really think he’ll keep listening to you?”
Christian’s face shifted, like he realized she’d caught on to his real plan.
“What makes you so sure you matter to Julian? Maybe you’re just a little too confident.”
“If I didn’t, you wouldn’t be here talking to me, would you?”
