Christian’s smile vanished in an instant, replaced by his typical stern look.
George jumped in right away. “Sir, Mr. Grayson was just passing by. He wanted to see the kids.”
Julian glanced at the two sleeping children. Once he saw they were fine, he looked back at Christian. “So, what brings you here?”
Christian’s eyes narrowed. “Is that really how you greet me?”
Julian shrugged. “What do you expect? Should I drop to my knees and start chanting your praises?”
That shut both Christian and George up.
Christian jabbed a finger in Julian’s direction. “See? This is what I mean,” he said to George. “Still sulking about what happened earlier.”
George scrambled to smooth things over. “Please, sir, he’s just kidding. Don’t take it to heart.”
Christian let out a low grunt, rubbing at his temple like he was getting a headache.
Madeline walked out, looking calm and put together. She caught Christian’s eye.
She lifted her eyebrows just a little, giving him a polite nod. “Christian.”
He looked away, saying nothing.
Madeline didn’t seem bothered.
She’d greeted him out of courtesy. Whether he answered or not, it didn’t matter to her.
Sometimes, she wondered what she could have possibly done wrong in those five years with the Grayson family. Christian’s attitude had gone from warm to cold, and now, to outright resentment. She honestly had no idea what mistake she’d made.
She went over, dumped out the cold tea, and made a fresh pot.
Nobody spoke. The only sound in the room was the quiet clink of teacups as Madeline worked. The tension was thick.
She brought a cup for Christian. Christian just looked at it and said, “I’m not drinking that. Take it away.”
“Whatever.”
Julian picked up the cup and downed it.
Christian shot Julian a glare, his face turning even darker. “Are you just going to upset me?”
Julian set down the empty cup and raised an eyebrow. “Did you want it?”
“I…” Christian looked like he was about to blow his top. “You’re going to be the death of me. George, we’re leaving.”
