Madeline couldn’t help but feel how ridiculous this all was. Helene blamed Raine, then the family turned around and blamed Helene. The blame kept bouncing back and forth, and somehow, everyone had their reasons, and no one was at fault.
She brushed past them. “Go home. Stop bothering me.”
“Madeline… Madeline, wait.” Kate rushed after her, grabbing her hand. “Don’t go, please. What if Grandma begs you? Could you let Raine go then?”
Madeline turned. The old lady sat in her wheelchair, staring at her with such sorrow it almost made her pause.
Madeline pressed her lips together. “Grandma.”
Kate hurried to push the wheelchair closer. The old lady reached for Madeline’s hand, her own trembling. “Madeline, just forgive Raine this once. I’m begging you, all right?”
“Grandma, my child almost died. How am I supposed to forgive her?”
She kept her voice flat and her gaze even, looking straight at the old lady.
“I know Raine went too far,” Grandma whispered, her voice frail and pleading. “But she’s still your sister. Please, forgive her this one time. I promise, I’ll make sure she’s disciplined. I won’t let her mess up again, I swear. Please, Madeline.”
That desperate, wavering voice made Madeline close her eyes for a moment, but when she opened them, her answer was final. “I’m sorry, Grandma. I can’t forgive her.”
Grandma held on tighter, her wrinkled hands warm but insistent. “Madeline, Raine, she—”
Madeline didn’t want to hear another word. She pulled her hand away, stepping back. “You don’t have to say anything else. I won’t forgive her, and I won’t let her off. Please, just go home.”
She stepped back again, then turned and walked away, done with the conversation.
Drew and Kate’s faces changed instantly.
Drew strode up and grabbed her arm. “Come back here. We begged you, tried to reason with you, and this is how you act? Are you really this cold-hearted?”
Kate chimed in, “Exactly! We’re family. Why are you so determined to ruin Raine? I think you’re the cruel one, Madeline. If you don’t let Raine go, we’re not leaving.”
The sudden pull aggravated the wound on her back, and pain shot through Madeline’s body. She winced, face tightening.
She glared at Drew and Kate, and the disgust in her eyes deepened.
Drew snapped, “I raised you. Not so you’d turn on your own sister.”
Madeline yanked her arm free. “You raised me? Drew, you stole everything my mother left for me. And you have the nerve to say you raised me?”
She took a shaky breath, her fury rising. “Did I turn on Raine? She has tried to hurt me how many times? You know that, don’t you? Where were you then? Why didn’t you speak up? Were you blind, or just pretending not to see? And now you want to ask me to forgive her? Seriously, have you no shame?”
“You... You ungrateful brat!” Drew’s face flushed with rage. He raised his hand, ready to slap her.
Madeline stared him down, eyes defiant.
