Christian shot Julian a look, his voice steady and commanding. “Julian, let them leave.”
Julian shook his head. “They’re not going anywhere.”
“Let them go!” Christian’s words landed hard, and suddenly the whole living room felt like it was buried in ice.
Everyone in the room watched the two of them, grandfather and grandson, both of them cold and unyielding in their own way. The tension was thick enough to touch.
Julian’s brow furrowed. “You really want to get involved in this?”
“I told you, if you couldn’t handle it, I would step in.”
Julian’s dark eyes narrowed. “The facts are clear. Everyone has to face the consequences for what they’ve done.”
“And what about her?” Christian shot a sharp glare at Madeline.
Julian didn’t even flinch. “She got what she deserved. If I were in the same position, I’d have done it too.”
Of course, he was talking about Helene.
Christian’s face grew even darker. He stared at Julian for a long moment, and when he realized Julian wasn’t going to back down, he snapped, “Come upstairs. Now.”
He stood up and walked toward the staircase.
Lucy reached out and gently tugged Julian’s sleeve. “Julian, your grandfather’s getting old. Don’t push him too far.”
“He’s the one pushing me.”
Upstairs, in the study, Christian let out a frustrated huff, eyes blazing with anger as he faced his most stubborn grandson. “Are you really going to keep going against me for her?”
Julian stood his ground, his voice calm and deep. “This isn’t about her. You know exactly who’s right and who’s wrong here. Helene crossed a line, and she has to deal with the consequences.”
