Helene watched Julian, searching his face for any hint of emotion. But he just looked cold, his eyes dark and impossible to read.
She clenched her jaw and her face went even paler. With a tired shake of her head, she let out a sigh. “Fine. I’ve already suffered so much because you don’t trust me. If you’re going to keep doubting me, there’s nothing I can do. Julian, I’m going back to my room.”
Helene lowered her head, her eyes full of sadness and frustration. As soon as she turned away, though, her whole expression changed. She looked furious.
Madeline! She was absolutely infuriating.
With nowhere else to go, Helene headed back to her hospital room.
Meanwhile, Madeline glanced away, her face calm, and stepped back into the room to sit with Noah. Oliver was there too. Seeing both her sons, Madeline couldn’t help but wonder if she’d made the right choice. If Julian found out the boys were his, she could lose them. The Graysons would never let their heirs be raised outside the family. Even if Julian didn’t fight her for custody, Christian would never allow it.
Two days passed. Noah was getting better and moved to a regular room.
The sound of breaking glass came from Helene’s room. She had swept everything off the table in a wild rage. “That bitch! She lied to me? Her son was out of danger. She even convinced the doctor to go along with it. Madeline, you’re so calculating.”
Helene was shaking, her breathing unsteady as anger burned in her eyes. Noah was alive. That ruined everything she’d planned. Now Julian had ordered a new paternity test, and his people were watching them closely. They didn’t have any more chances.
Her lips twisted into a bitter smile as tears slid down her face. She’d done so much, and yet it was Madeline who would benefit in the end.
