Bill froze for a second, his eyes darting around as he quickly snapped back, “That’s ridiculous. How do you know she’s saying the truth? You know Helene and her never get along. She’s just slandering Helene. Tell her to show some proof or stop throwing around wild accusations like this.”
Julian gave a cold, almost lazy smirk, his voice quiet but sharp. “Right back at you.”
All three Fortners went silent, caught off guard.
Helene’s voice trembled. She stared at Julian, her eyes wide and watery. “Julian, it really was her. Don’t you believe me?”
Julian’s gaze landed on Helene’s pale, fragile face. He sounded almost bored. “You’re saying Madeline did this. Tell me why she would?”
Helene hesitated, pressing her lips together. Tears spilled down her cheeks. “Because Madeline said I hurt her child. But I swear I didn’t. Julian, I didn’t even know she had a son. How could I possibly hurt him?”
She sniffled, her desperation growing. “I don’t know why she keeps blaming me. Is it just because we have history? Does every bad thing that happens to her have to be my fault?”
Her words tumbled out, rushed and full of hurt. Even though her voice was soft, her tone was firm, almost pleading for someone to take her side. She looked up at Julian, her eyes shining with tears. “Julian, please believe me. I never hurt her son, but she really did try to hurt me. She wanted me to bleed out. She stabbed my leg with that knife.”
She sounded so earnest, but in the end it all came down to one thing. She didn’t hurt Madeline. Madeline was the person who her. She made herself sound so innocent.
Julian’s eyes grew even colder, studying her. For a moment, something flickered across Helene’s face, but she forced herself to keep looking at him.
Courtney finally spoke up. “Julian, Helene’s told you everything. If it wasn’t Madeline, why would Helene cover for the real attacker and blame Madeline instead?” Courtney’s voice shook with anger. She looked like she wanted to go after Madeline herself.
Julian didn’t react. His face stayed unreadable. It was impossible to know what he was thinking.
After Julian left, Helene broke down, covering her face with her hands as she sobbed. “Mom, Dad, why won’t Julian believe me?”
Bill clenched his jaw. “He’s not really looking for the truth. He just wants an excuse to protect her.”
