Miles hurried off to take care of it as the sky outside slowly brightened.
Meanwhile, the Fortner family’s living room was filled with laughter and the kind of happiness that comes after a long night’s work. Courtney had just heard about what Helene had done, and she couldn’t stop laughing. “Wait, really? Is the kid dead?”
Helene stretched out on the sofa, head propped on her hand, a bright smile tugging at her lips. “Not yet, but honestly, it’s pretty much the same as being dead.”
“I don’t know why, Mom, but this time everything just went so smoothly,” Helene said.
Courtney grinned. “That’s fate helping you out. Even the universe wants to see you win.”
Helene agreed. She’d planned to have someone steal Gabby’s keys, but, to her shock, Gabby herself had let her people in. When the hired guys reported back, Helene had genuinely been surprised. She never expected Gabby to help her out. Not that she was going to overthink it. The important thing was that her tracks were clean, Gabby was the perfect scapegoat, and there was nothing for her to worry about. As long as no one could find evidence, what could they do to her?
Helene’s smile turned even brighter.
Courtney kept piling on the praise. “You are so brilliant. That idiot Madeline could never compete with you.”
Helene felt a rush of satisfaction. She accepted all the compliments with a little smugness. She really was better than Madeline at everything. Who did Madeline think she was, trying to compete? As for that bastard kid in the hospital, Helene had already paid off the doctor. The kid was barely hanging on, and just a little accident would be enough to finish him off. Helene was already waiting for good news from the hospital.
Courtney looked even happier after hearing Helene’s update, and didn’t hold back with the praise.
Helene stretched, looking pleased. “Mom, Mrs. Grayson was pretty shaken up last night. I’m going over to keep her company and see what I can find out. She’s being nice to me again. Everything’s working out. I think I can start planning my engagement to Julian.”
Courtney smoothed Helene’s hair. “Good. I’ve already started planning. You’ll be the most beautiful bride in the city, and once you marry Julian, every girl in town will be jealous of you.”
Helene nodded, grinning, then hugged her mom tight.
After getting dressed and tidying up, Helene headed straight to the Grayson house.
Lucy, maybe feeling guilty about what happened last night, was kneeling in the prayer room, chanting in front of the statue when Helene arrived.
A staff came over quietly and whispered, “Ma’am, Ms. Fortner is here.”
Lucy slowly opened her eyes and lifted a hand. Two maids came to help her into her wheelchair.
When she saw Helene, Lucy asked, “Why are you here so early?”
Helene stepped behind Lucy’s chair and gently started pushing her. “I was just worried about you, Mrs. Grayson. You seemed so scared last night, so I thought I’d come check on you.”
