Thorns Grow After Betrayal (Celeste and Chester) novel Chapter 317

Not only did Gideon answer every question without missing a beat, but when the subject of marriage came up, he shot a meaningful glance at Celestine. “Grandpa, I’m currently single. Never dated, and certainly never married.”

Celestine did her best to keep her composure, staring at her shoes as if she could will herself invisible.

Her toes curled with embarrassment.

Not long ago, she’d made a fool of herself over a misunderstanding about Gideon being married.

Now, listening to him clarify everything so seriously, she wished she could crawl into a hole and disappear all over again.

Grandpa really did know how to pick the worst possible topics.

Luther nodded thoughtfully. “You know, Gideon, you do look awfully familiar to me.”

Celestine’s heart skipped a beat. If the conversation went any further, her grandfather would probably drag out Gideon’s entire family tree.

And with the way Gideon answered questions, she had no doubt he’d happily provide every detail.

Thinking fast, she made up an excuse and whisked him away.

“Weren’t you going to fetch Grandpa’s medication? This isn’t even the right floor,” Gideon suddenly reminded her.

Celestine shook her head, finally voicing what had been on her mind. “Mr. Prescott, my grandfather might’ve misunderstood something earlier. Please don’t take it to heart.”

That look her grandfather—and Pete, for that matter—had given Gideon, the guarded tone in their voices, reminded her of the first time she’d brought Chester home.

She could sense right away they’d gotten the wrong idea about her relationship with Gideon…

Gideon’s gaze darkened, but his voice was gentle. “It’s fine. If you need anything, just let me know.”

Trailing behind them, Vernon was all ears, determined to blend into the scenery.

Honestly, Miss Selwyn just didn’t understand the young master at all.

He’d be thrilled if people misunderstood things even more!

He hadn’t even needed to come himself today—a couple of bodyguards would’ve been enough to sort out the Selwyn family’s troublemakers.

But the moment he’d mentioned Miss Selwyn’s name to the young master, Gideon canceled his meeting without a second thought.

Sometimes Vernon wished his boss actually said what he was thinking.

And Miss Selwyn? Oblivious as ever!

Well, clearly it was time for him to step in.

“Mr. Prescott, your postponed meeting has been officially canceled. The Global Bid Summit is set to restart in about an hour. Is there anything else you’d like me to arrange?”
