Felicia gently ran her fingers through Anne’s hair. “It’s still a bit early.”

Anne rested her head on Felicia’s lap, not satisfied with the answer. “But, Mom, when is it exactly?”

Felicia looked down at Anne’s big, shining eyes and let out a quiet sigh. “When the pomegranate flowers bloom.”

The words stirred up a memory. Felicia remembered the day she found out she was pregnant. It had been her birthday. Her neighbor stopped by with a bouquet of pomegranate blossoms. Max sat beside Felicia. Anne scampered over, pressing herself against him. “Daddy, when do pomegranate flowers bloom?”

Anne brightened. “Then you have to make Mommy a special birthday present this year. You have to make it yourself.”

Felicia didn’t take his promise too seriously.

For the next couple of days, Felicia and Max kept Anne company at the villa. They helped her open birthday presents from all over the world, the gifts piled so high they looked like a mountain.
