Anne kept her head down, pouting, clearly upset.
Felicia sighed and finally gave in. “Alright, I’ll stay for one more day,” she promised. “Next time I have some free time, I’ll come back and spend it with you.”
Anne lifted her head a little. With other kids around to play with, she relented. “The manor looks especially pretty in the fall. You and Daddy should both come then. We can all play together.”
Felicia just nodded. “Of course.”
Anne held up her pinky. “Let’s pinky promise, Mommy.”
Felicia smiled and hooked her little finger with Anne’s. Just like that, Anne cheered up.
The next day, Greg had to leave. His company was reopening, so he was flying back home.
Heather stayed behind, planning to leave with Felicia the following day.
Felicia spent one more day just for Anne.
That afternoon, Felicia splashed around by the water with the kids and ended up soaking the hem of her dress. She slipped upstairs to her bedroom’s closet to change. As she opened the door, she caught sight of Max—impeccably dressed in a suit, with the maid helping him adjust his cufflinks. He looked every bit the part of someone used to power and privilege, handsome and self-assured.
Max’s gaze landed on her wet dress. “Watch out. Don’t catch a cold.”
Felicia just shook her head. “Go out if you are done. I need to change.”
Max reached over, picked up a sleek watch from its box, and stepped out, the maid following him.
When Felicia came back out, she found Max still waiting for her in the room.
“I’ve got a reception to go to tonight,” he said. “I’ll be home late. You and Anne can go to bed without me.”
Felicia just hummed, her answer quiet. She didn’t ask anything else.
